    About The Artwork

Add a stunning piece of turn-of-the-century craftsmanship to your collection with this antique Japanese moriage cabinet vase. Dating from the late Meiji to early Showa era (circa 1900-1920s), this handled vessel showcases the highly intricate, heavily textured slip work that made Japanese export porcelain world-famous.

    Quick Glance:
    Size: 3 inches x 5.5 inches x 5.5 inches
    weight: 1 lb. 5.6 oz
    Year: 1900-1920s
    Origin: Japan
    Style: Nippon
    Condition: Excellent
Interior: very clean white porcelain. Please note a minor manufacturing anomaly on the rim — a tiny stray drop of dark brown slip occurred during the hand-painting process, which was permanently sealed under the smooth, glossy final glaze prior to its original kiln firing.
Bottom: Unmarked. It is very common for mid-20th-century Japanese porcelain imports intended for the western markets to be left completely unstamped.

The body features a beautiful contrast between a matte, earth-toned slip background and vibrant, glossy enamel sections in rich yellow, deep green, and plum. Delicate, hand-piped white "jeweled" moriage lines outline the stylized floral petals and foliage motifs.

Because this piece was hand-decorated for the Western export market, it features an unmarked base — a very common characteristic for porcelain blanks finished in regional decorating studios during this period. When inverted, the brilliant white porcelain core sharply contrasts with the hand-applied decorative exterior slip layers.

Condition Report: This vase is remarkably well-preserved for its age. The delicate raised white moriage dotting ("jeweling") is overwhelmingly intact with minimal missing fragments. No visible chips, hairline fractures, or structural cracks to the handles or rim. Displays very minor, authentic surface dust within the deep texturing, consistent with its century-long history.

Please review the high-resolution macro photos to appreciate the stunning condition of the raised slip work.

    Clean and Care:
Remove dry dust first using a clean, dry, soft-bristled artist's paintbrush or makeup brush to gently sweep away loose dust from the crevices. Do not use microfiber or terry cloth towels for dry dusting, as the fibers can catch and pull off the fragile raised enamel dots.
Clean Surface Dirt: Moisten a cotton swab with lukewarm water. Squeeze out any excess so it is only slightly damp, not dripping. Gently roll the damp swab over dirty areas, working in small sections and changing swabs frequently as they pick up dirt. Dry the area immediately with a clean, dry cotton swab.
