Please review all photos carefully before purchasing. Full condition notes below.
Bring timeless elegance and symbolic artistry into your home with this striking vintage Satsuma-style moriage vase. Featuring intricate raised gilt work, double handles, and hand-painted floral motifs on a deep cobalt blue and cream ground.
The base features a hand-painted iron-red signature alongside an incised design production number {6372}
Production Period: The combination of a clean, unglazed stoneware foot ring, the painted artist signature style, and the stamped or incised modern design serial number 6372 identifies this as an early to mid-20th-century piece {1930–1950s}. Genuine 19th-century Meiji era Satsuma pieces typically carry the circular Shimazu family crest alongside calligraphy stating Dai Nippon {Great Japan}
Condition:
An authentic age patina on a Satsuma-style moriage vase is what elevates it from a mere decorative object to a piece with history and character. The softened “satin” cream background mellows into a buttery, soft-satin luster. Deep within the signature crazing of fine glaze cracks within the deep cobalt and cream background. An aged patina shows gentle rub-wear along high-relief edges — such as the tops of the double handles, the outer rim, and raised floral petals.
Cobalt blue displays microscopic surface micro-abrasions and subtle tonal variations. Along the base ring exposed stoneware, aged chips at the top rim, and aged repair of paint near the handle on the backside of vase.
Styling Suggestion:
Makes a captivating centerpiece on a mantel, entry console, or curio cabinet — whether displayed empty as a standalone art piece or styled with faux branches or dried florals.
